Dr. Shakya is investigating molecular mechanism(s) by which the equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) IR2 protein (IR2P) functions as a negative regulator and eventually to determine if IR2P may be used in the treatment of EHV-1 infections. Another project is to determine the molecular mechanisms by which the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) IE62 activates viral gene expression and replication.
